Summer is here and so is estara’s Supported Accessible Beach Days at Glenelg beach
estara provides these accessible beach days in collaboration with the City of Holdfast Bay and is a wonderful opportunity for wheelchair users and those with mobility difficulties to safely enjoy the beach and water. We have 6 dates from Sunday January 12th, 2025, until Saturday March 22nd running between 10am – 2pm each day.
During these free events, two Mobi-Chair floating wheelchairs and one Sandcruiser wheelchair are available to book by estara clients, members and the general public. Available wheelchairs include the Mobi-Chair which can be used in the water and the Sandcruiser which is for use on the sand only. There may be a casual Mobi-Chair available for use on the day if needed. It’s recommended to book in advance to secure your spot, with bookings available for 1-hour for each session.
Volunteers from estara, the City of Holdfast Bay, and the Lifetime Support Authority will be on-site to offer support. There will be shade structures provided by the City of Holdfast Bay.
Special beach matting has been added from the DDA-approved ramp to the foreshore at Glenelg beach and is open 24/7 to beachgoers with prams or trolleys, as well as those people looking for steadier access across the sand. Additional matting is added on each of the Accessible Beach Days to reach all the way into the water.

Increased Wheelchair Beach Access due to Grant received
In mid-December, South Australian Minister for Human Services Nat Cook MP announced estara as a 2024-25 Social Impact Grants recipient. The grant will be used to purchase another Mobi-Chair floating wheelchair and waterproof communicators to the value of over $9,000. This equipment will significantly improve the quality of life for our clients, as well as members of the general public, and allow them to access the water during our Supported Accessible Beach Days over Summer.
Minister Cook expressed her support for initiatives that promote inclusivity and wheelchair accessibility for individuals in the community and commended estara for our innovative approach.
