community programs
Be connected. Take part in our community-based programs for unique and exciting support pathways.
Our community programs are tailored to the unique needs of those living with spinal cord injury and neurological conditions. You can gain access to support from our dedicated volunteers, enjoy accessible recreation activities across Greater Adelaide, and take part in dinners hosted by estara’s Spinal Nurse Consultants.
Volunteer support for home, community, and virtual inclusion
Our volunteer program provides valuable services that are not currently covered by funding frameworks, for those living with spinal cord injury and neurological conditions.
estara’s volunteers can support you with:
- Dog walking – keep your beloved pet healthy with regular exercise
- Home visits and shopping – share a coffee and chat with a volunteer or get support for shopping trips in person
- Phone support – connect with a volunteer over the phone for a chat to brighten your day
- Handy tasks and gardening – get help around the home with gardening and maintenance tasks
Recreational support for wheelchair users
estara’s recreation program operates three groups in the north, south and west of metropolitan Adelaide and its surrounds. Each group meets fortnightly for a fully organised and facilitated event, providing an opportunity for those using a wheelchair as their primary means of mobility to establish friendships in their community.
Our recreational activities include:
- Gathering at local eateries or cafes
- Visiting and touring landmarks and natural environments
- Arts and crafts
Support for families and friends
estara’s monthly ‘Take some time out’ dinners are an opportunity for family members and significant others of patients currently in the Spinal Rehabilitation Unit to debrief, discuss personal experiences, and connect with others in the same situation. Family members can continue attending dinners for a short period after the patient is discharged to assist with navigating transition periods.
Dinners are hosted by estara’s Spinal Nurse Consultants who provide support, advice and information on the spinal injury journey. Contact our team if you would like to attend.
